This can be administered in a number of ways, from nitrous oxide gas to a pill you take before your appointment. You\u2019d have to ask your dentist to see all the forms of sedation they offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will Sedation Stop Pain?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sedatives are different from anesthetics in that they don\u2019t prevent pain, just anxiety. That said, your dentist will be happy to pair sedation treatment with a strong anesthetic to eliminate your chances of feeling anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will I Be Awake?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some dental practices will offer general anesthesia that can put you to sleep for your procedure, but this is exceedingly rare, and it\u2019s reserved mostly for special needs patients who can\u2019t respond to instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the most part, you will be conscious during sedation, albeit in a much more relaxed state than you would be otherwise. This is so you can continue to follow the dentist\u2019s instructions and can alert them if you\u2019re in any pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Long Will It Last? Can I Drive Home?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each method of sedation lasts for a different amount of time. Nitrous oxide should fade within minutes after the flow of gas, while oral sedation can linger for hours afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone\u2019s different, however, so it\u2019s recommended that you get a ride back from your appointment in either case. For oral sedation, you\u2019ll have to get a ride to your appointment as well. Plan to rest for a day or so and refrain from operating heavy machinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is it Safe?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your dentist is a trained medical professional who understands and takes seriously the risks associated with these drugs. You should talk with them beforehand about any health concerns you may have, but the fact is that there isn\u2019t anything to be concerned about.
