Do you get nervous at the idea of going to the dental office? This is much more common than you may think. Over 30 million Americans experience stress at one level or another related to their dental visits. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to avoid dental care. It’s essential that you see a dentist regularly for checkups. Fortunately, there are a couple dental sedation options available to take the edge off of your appointment, but what exactly do they feel like? Continue reading to find out.

What Does Nitrous Oxide Sedation Feel Like?

Nitrous oxide is the fancy scientific name for laughing gas. This is a mild, yet effective sedation treatment for people with dental anxiety or who need the edge taken off for more advanced procedures. The nitrogen and oxygen blend is delivered by a mask that will be placed over your nose. You will remain conscious and alert when under nitrous oxide sedation, yet you will also feel deeply relaxed and free of fear. Nitrous oxide wears off after just a few minutes of breathing normal oxygen in the air and is perfectly safe.

What Does Oral Conscious Sedation Feel Like?

Oral conscious sedation is a medication that is taken before your treatment begins. This oral medication may make you feel mildly or moderately sedation, but you will still be conscious. It will just help you to feel very deeply relaxed, so you don’t have anything to worry about. You will be aware of your surrounding and able to communicate with your dental team while under sedation. Since this sedation option is heavier, you might end up feeling groggy for the rest of the day, as it takes several hours for the effects to completely wear off.

How Do You Prepare for Sedation Dentistry?

You should discuss your medical history and current health with your dentist to help determine whether or not sedation dentistry is the right option for you. If you are opting for nitrous oxide sedation, you won’t need to do anything ahead of time to prepare for your appointment. However, if you are using oral conscious sedation, you will need to organize a ride home from your appointment. Since the sedation takes time to wear off, a trusted friend or family member should drive you.

Dental anxiety isn’t a reason to avoid getting essential dental treatment. Instead, ask your dentist about sedation dentistry. You may just find something that can help you get the oral care you need worry-free!
