Three Good Reasons to Stop Being Embarrassed at the Dentist

If there’s one thing people fear, it’s embarrassment. It’s telling that the most common nightmares are of failing to study for a test or giving work presentations we aren’t prepared for. We don’t want to be humiliated. Unfortunately, the same fear applies to dentistry. Many people are insecure about their teeth and are worried they’ll be embarrassed at the dentist’s office. They put off getting regular checkups, which only makes them more insecure about the next time they visit. Fear of embarrassment is understandable, but in this case, it’s not necessary. Your dentist isn’t going to judge you! Here are a few reasons why you should try to overcome that fear.

If You Have Problems, Your Dentist Can Fix Them

A surprising amount of people think their teeth are beyond help, or that if they try to get help, they’ll just be shamed. They may have even had a dentist lecture them in the past instead of helping them. That isn’t ok, and it’s also not typical. The fact is that most dentists do what they do because they want to help people, and oral medicine has become so advanced that there’s hardly anyone beyond saving. Whatever your issue is, your visit won’t just be about making you feel bad, it’ll be about addressing your concerns.

If You Avoid the Dentist, Your Problems Could Get Worse

While most issues can be fixed, the opposite is also true; if you ignore them, they could get worse. Problems with your teeth can lead to bacterial infection, which can easily spread to the gums. Gum disease is progressive, meaning can come to affect your entire mouth, which is bound to cause even further tooth decay, or even loss.

Moreover, your teeth and your overall wellness are closely related. Ducking the dentist doesn’t just make your oral health worse, it puts your physical health at risk.

Your Dentist is a Professional

Worrying that people will judge you is understandable. If you’re insecure about your teeth, you’ve probably spent hours stressing about your appearance. You might think your mouth is the worst there is. It almost certainly isn’t.

To become a dentist, you have to look inside hundreds of mouths, and see thousands more pictures of them. These people spend all day examining gum disease and tooth decay. They aren’t squeamish. Your mouth is probably not the worst they’ve seen, and even if it were it’d just be an exciting new challenge for them to take on.

A good dentist’s priority is giving you the best smile they can, but they can only do that if you’re willing to show up and be honest about your issues. If you don’t, your problems will only get worse. If you do, then you can start working towards having a smile you can be truly proud of. So don’t be afraid to take control of your oral health. You can do it!
