Answering The Most Common Questions About Sedation Dentistry

It’s recommended that most people see their dentist at least twice a year for regular dental care, but for those with dental anxiety, doing that can be a challenge. Thankfully, sedation dentistry can help even the most nervous patients feel completely at ease during their appointments.

If you’re someone who thinks that you could benefit from sedation dentistry, here are some answers to questions that you may have.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Broadly, sedation dentistry describes the use of anxiety-reducing drugs to put nervous patients at ease. This can be administered in a number of ways, from nitrous oxide gas to a pill you take before your appointment. You’d have to ask your dentist to see all the forms of sedation they offer.

Will Sedation Stop Pain?

Sedatives are different from anesthetics in that they don’t prevent pain, just anxiety. That said, your dentist will be happy to pair sedation treatment with a strong anesthetic to eliminate your chances of feeling anything.

Will I Be Awake?

Some dental practices will offer general anesthesia that can put you to sleep for your procedure, but this is exceedingly rare, and it’s reserved mostly for special needs patients who can’t respond to instructions.

For the most part, you will be conscious during sedation, albeit in a much more relaxed state than you would be otherwise. This is so you can continue to follow the dentist’s instructions and can alert them if you’re in any pain.

How Long Will It Last? Can I Drive Home?

Each method of sedation lasts for a different amount of time. Nitrous oxide should fade within minutes after the flow of gas, while oral sedation can linger for hours afterward.

Everyone’s different, however, so it’s recommended that you get a ride back from your appointment in either case. For oral sedation, you’ll have to get a ride to your appointment as well. Plan to rest for a day or so and refrain from operating heavy machinery.

Is it Safe?

Your dentist is a trained medical professional who understands and takes seriously the risks associated with these drugs. You should talk with them beforehand about any health concerns you may have, but the fact is that there isn’t anything to be concerned about. You’re in good hands.
